What changed
- Problem
- The page took too long to give learners a reason to try speaking.
- Fix
- I built it around a short speaking exercise and an example of the feedback.
- Result
- The first screen now shows what the app does.
Lingua is an English app I'm still developing for Chinese speakers who find reading English easier than speaking it. The page should get them to try a speaking exercise.
The top of the page talked about an AI teacher instead of what the learner wanted: to say one useful sentence without freezing.
People had to read too much about the app before they could try it.
The page needed to show the help: a question, a correction, and an improved sentence to try.
The copy didn't sound like it was written for Chinese speakers. It needed examples and concerns they could recognise.
I put a short speaking exercise at the centre of the page: choose a situation, answer out loud, read the correction and try again.
The page opens with the offer to practise speaking without waiting for a teacher. A 20-second exercise shows how corrections work, before the page explains the other benefits.
Lingua is my own product, so I keep changing the page as the product changes. I work the same way on client websites: I write, design and build them.
